Why You Should Take Proper Care of Your Skin at Any Age

The skin, which is the largest organ in the body, is an important one that serves as the boundary between the internal and the external environment. The appearance of the skin is one of the easiest ways to determine the condition of health of an individual, as many illnesses and diseases reduce the vibrant look of the skin and sometimes even lead to an ashen complexion. Of course, a healthy skin offers an advantage in aesthetics and fashion, hence the saying that beautiful skin is the first fashion requirement before any cosmetics.

The skin grows old as the human’s age, and it can sometimes be an indication of how old an individual is. It is also subject to different climatic conditions, nutritional properties and levels of hydration, all of which mark their effect on it. It is however possible to slow the ageing process of the skin and ensure that it looks young, or even younger than the actual age of a person.

What are the steps you can take to ensure a healthy skin at any age?

Before you believe the adverts and comments on personal care companies’ review sites, you should know that there are some steps you can take to ensure you maintain healthy skin at any age.

Here are some of them:

  • The sun’s effect on the skin can lead to damages with effects such as wrinkles, age spots and so on, which is why the first rule of skincare is wearing sunscreen and protecting your skin from the ultraviolet rays of the sun. For your choice of sunscreen, ensure you use nothing less than SPF 15, and if you will be outdoor for a long while (for picnics, swimming, hiking or any other activity), apply it two-hourly until you go back indoors.
  • For your facial skin, you can invest in some cleansing, toning and moisturizing products. Many women (and some men) use cosmetics that can cause a build-up of dirt that clogs the skin and cause breakouts, or reduce the healthy look of the skin. Online stores like gorgeous shop offer a variety of these products in the chemical and organic categories to meet a variety of preferences.
  • Also, ensure you use the right product for your skin. If you cannot determine the type of product to use, consult a dermatologist for evaluation of your skin type and recommendation of which products will best suit your skin. Be careful about products branded as organic, and ensure that the organic label is not just a marketing ploy to drive sales.
  • Eat for the health of your skin. There are different types of food that promotes healthy skin such as lean proteins, fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Some researchers say that refined protein and excess sugar could lead to fast ageing of the skin, while food rich in fish oil, omega acids, amino acids and so on are ideal for the skin.
  • Hydrate. You need water to flush out toxins from your system, as well as transport nutrients to different parts of the body. When you are dehydrated, you put pressure on your organs, causing a build-up of toxins that might lead to other health challenges. As earlier mentioned, any underlying health condition will show in the look of your skin, so drink enough water throughout the day to slow down ageing. Women are advised to drink approximately 2.25 litres of water per day, while men require about 3 litres per day. Also, factor in the climatic condition, as you might require more during summer or if you live in hot regions.
  • Exercise increases the flow of blood to the skin, nourishing it, removing the dirt and boosting its elasticity. A study says exercising moderately for about 60 per cent of your maximum daily heart rate, five times a week will rejuvenate your skin.
  • Smoking will age your skin fast! It contributes to wrinkling of the skin, while also decreasing blood flow to the skin to cause a pale appearance. Elastin and collagen (which are the main structural protein in the skin) are destroyed by smoking, while the chances of cancer (lungs, skin, etc.) are increased by the act. If you want healthy skin at any age, quit smoking.
